CONTEMPORARY PORTRAITS

The major witnesses of abolition

For several years now, photographer Christophe Meireis has been seeking out those who have managed to escape from the hell of a capital sentence. Moved by these people’s stories, and by the look in their eyes, he wanted to represent their voices. Striking quotes in contrast with the portraits’ peaceful gazes; this is how the artist presents the major witnesses of the abolitionist movement. Whether as a result of a rush judgement, a direct summons, or some fateful encounter, these women and men bear witness to the demons of humanity.
